What we do / Training and Education
We are here for you.
We want to encourage and support each individual to make their own life decisions.
At Stepping Stones, we believe that any form of higher-education or apprenticeship is extremely beneficial to a young adult. It is vital for their independence to ensure that they have authority over their own life choices.
Education and training opportunities are also vital in developing their social skills and building their confidence. At Stepping Stones, we are encourage our service users to take advantage of the opportunities available to them and help them along their journey.
What Opportunities Are Available?
We will help the people we support to find the right education and apprenticeship opportunities that suits them.
We work with our young people to find accessible educational opportunities through the SEND system, for anyone up to the age of 25, if they are still in education or training. We can also find employment training options for those that would prefer to start working after school.
Many colleges have courses which can help people with learning disabilities to develop their life skills and abilities. They can help you move onto further education, develop workplace skills or help you to get a job. All of these opportunities are key to gaining independence and in becoming valuable members of the community.
Apprenticeships
If a person is over 16, they can apply for an Apprenticeship.
There are various types of apprenticeships based on skills and qualifications. Training is mainly conducted in the workplace and offers at least 30 hours per week.
Traineeships
Traineeships are education and training programmes with work experience, designed for people aged 16-24.
They often provide preparation for work training, high-quality work experience and English and maths support. They usually last up to 6 months.
Supported Internships
A supported internship is a programme for young people aged 16 to 24 who have an Education, Health and Care Plan and want to move into paid employment but need extra support to do so.
Supported Internships are comprised of a lot less classroom study, including less English and maths support. The aims of the internships are to equip students with workplace skills by working in and around the workplace itself. They are unpaid and usually last for a minimum of 6 months.
What Can Stepping Stones Do?
Stepping Stones can help the people we support to gain the very best opportunities out of life. We will support the decisions of our service users and guide them through the opportunities available to them, whether that's education, traineeships, supported internships or apprenticeships.
